Back to Basics Cooking with Malaysian Palm Oil

The idea that all fat is unhealthy is both antiquated and new at the same time. Let's get back to basics. When I was a kid, diet foods and lower-calorie butter substitutes were  all the rage. Everything was low-fat, processed, and supposedly better for you. Think back to the dreamy-man-filled “I can’t believe it’s not butter” commercials! Well, research has recently put those ideas all to bed. It turns out that eating foods in their natural state is the way to go. We are going back in time to nutrition as it was before processed food became the norm. Fat is not the enemy. When it comes to fat, there are healthy and unhealthy fats. The best kinds of fat are the fats found in plants – avocados, nuts, and natural plant oils. Malaysian palm oil is a great source of natural, healthy fats. Check out this post to see how Malaysian palm oils fits into a back to basics style of cooking.

Back to Basics Cooking

The general concept of back to basics cooking is just as simple as it sounds. It also happens to be a theory that I try to focus on in our home. Eating foods in their natural state is key to absorbing food nutrition. Cutting out processed foods (and fats!) can help you maintain a healthy weight, keep your blood sugar in check, and even reduce junk food cravings.

Cooking with Malaysian Palm Oil

To be honest, palm oil is not one that I have cooked with before. Olive oil and coconut oil tend to be my go-tos. Reading up on palm oil, it is definitely a great, versatile cooking oil. It is stable at high temperatures, which makes it great for popcorn! I was actually a little surprised by how big of a difference switching oils was in making popcorn. It was so easy to make on the stove top, and our family loved the light, but flavorful effect that the palm oil had. All that we added was a little bit of salt.

Nutritional Information

So how does palm oil stack up to other oils nutrition-wise? Like all things health, it depends on what you are looking for in your oils. I compared this bottle of palm oil to olive oil and coconut oil. All of the oils contained 14g of fat per serving, and no trans fats.
