Apple chips are a favorite healthy snack in our family. Every fall we go to an orchard and pick a bushel of apples and we make pie and apple chips out of them. We even went this past year when we had a one month old baby! It was a nice outing…but I’m not sure that we would do that again. That’s a story that I don’t need to get into now. 🙂 Anyway, apple chips are great. They are a healthy treat to replace either sweets or your crunchy snacks. They are also so simple to make. I know that some people add sugar to theirs, but I really don’t think that the apples need it.

To make your apple chips you will need:
- A dehydrator
- I have one like this with trays: NutriChef Electric Food Dehydrator 6 Trays
but I know that a lot of people like the ones with the drawers: MAGIC MILL Pro Food Dehydrator, 6 Drying Racks
- I have one like this with trays: NutriChef Electric Food Dehydrator 6 Trays
- Something to cut apples with
- I got this for Christmas and it was awesome! So easy: Precision Kitchenware – Stainless Steel Apple Peeler Corer and Slicer – Luxury Black Edition
but before that I just used the slicer on the side of our cheese grater.
you can also just use a knife
- I got this for Christmas and it was awesome! So easy: Precision Kitchenware – Stainless Steel Apple Peeler Corer and Slicer – Luxury Black Edition
- 6 apples
- 2 tbs Lemon juice (to keep apples from browning)
- 1 tbs Cinnamon
- 1/2 tbs Apple pie spice
- 1/2 tbs Nutmeg
You can always mix up the spices if you want as well. In this batch I used 2 tbs of cinnamon because I really love cinnamon…2 tbs was a lot though. I would say 1 – 1 1/2 would be better.
Step 1:
Cut the apples into slices
The thickness is sort of up to you, just make sure that they are all consistent. Thinner slices will dry faster and end up crispier.
Step 2:
In a mixing bowl, sprinkle lemon juice and spices over apple slices
Step 3:
Toss and coat the apple slices evenly
Step 4:
Lay the apple slices flat in the dehydrator
Step 5:
Leave in dehydrator on high for 8-10 hours, until desired crispness.
I usually rotate the trays every hour or so because I think it makes them dry more evenly.
Step 6:
Enjoy!
I gave one to my 8-month-old and he loved it. He chewed on it until it was mostly a rehydrated mess and actually consumed about half of it. 🙂
What’s your favorite dehydrated snack? I’d love some new recipes to try. Tell me in the comments.

Great guide. Mine guzzle down dried apple like they’re air so would be great to be able to make them myself #TwinklyTuesday
They’re so easy to make, and much less expensive if you find apples on sale!
Thanks for reading. 🙂
I was just telling my kiddos that we have an awesome dehydrator and that we need to use it more. Your tip is so timely.
We usually only use ours in the fall! We make apple chips and then dry peppers from our garden.
I hope I was able to give you a snack idea. 🙂
I have quite literally never thought about drying peppers. What a great idea. I like drying tomatoes too. 🙂
My husband does it (in the garage because of the smell!) and then grinds them up with a coffee grinder. It makes a nice spiced seasoning. 🙂
I have never heard of a dehydrater, that is so cool! Thank you for the step by step Lexie! #sharethejoy
They are great for suing with fruits and veggies. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Lexie, I toyed with getting a dehydrator a while back, but wasn’t sure if I’d use it to it’s full potential, but you’ve got me thinking again as I do enjoy nibbling dried fruit and it’s not cheap to buy! I love this recipe too!

I haven’t tried those. Do they have added sugar? That’s the first thing I look for in dried fruit.
Yummm I’m so hungry now! It doesn’t seem too difficult I will have to give this a try, thanks for sharing with #GlobalBlogging!
Very easy! Let me know how it goes. 🙂
